Research

My role includes developing and carrying out research in Medical Engineering and Clinical Physiology. I try to keep actively involved in a number of research areas, these include:

bullet

The use of neural networks in the analysis of complex data.

bullet

Pattern detection and classification in complex data such as medical time series and images

bullet

Statistical analysis

bullet

The process of clinical decision making.

bullet

Ergonomics and human factors in surgical theatre and equipment design.

bullet

The analysis of GI measurements with a particular focus on understanding and improving measurements of oesophageal function. The modelling of physiological systems.

This work includes both independent and collaborative research on a range of subjects ranging from analysis of complex time series data to ergonomic assessment of new medical devices. My other interests include the active mentorship of a wide range of clinical staff.

Medical Engineering

As part of my day to day managerial roles I am also interested in all aspects of Medical Equipment Management. I was the Contract and IT Manager within the Medical Engineering Department of Manchester's largest University Teaching Trust. My main roles include:

The development and management of the Departments Medical Equipment Information management system. This is the IT system which is used to manage all aspects of equipment maintenance in the Trust. This is an Access based system which I have developed over many years.

bullet

The administration and management of the maintenance contracts which fund the department.

My recent management interests include the proposal to state register staff who carry out maintenance, repair and servicing as 'Clinical Technologists'. For reports I have made for the IET and IEE (follow IET and IEE links ) and for the latest open meeting with the NHS Chief Scientific Officer regarding this subject (follow this Link). My interests have recently included the recasting of the Medical Device Directives and there contribution to equipment safety. This included the following submission during the recent consultation see - Recast of the Medical Devices Directive.
